Aizawl: Three Mizo children were conferred with the prestigious Indian Council of Child Welfare (ICCW) National Bravery Awards 2019 by President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi on Wednesday.
The children are Carolyn Malsawmtluangi, a resident of Zuangtui, Aizawl; Lalliansanga, a resident of Phullen; and Vanlalhriatrenga, a resident of Sairang Dinthar, who were selected by the Mizoram State Council of Child Welfare (MSCCW).
Carolyn, 11, rescued a girl from her kidnapper in her locality in June 2019. She was even honoured by Community Health Action Network (CHAN) for her bravery.
Lalliansanga, a resident of Phullen has also been awarded for saving his friend who was almost electrocuted while they were playing near a transformer.
The third awardee, Vanlalhriatrenga, was awarded for saving a boy who was drowning at Tlawng river.
The National Bravery Awards were started by the Indian Council for Child Welfare in 1957 to recognise the children for their outstanding deeds of bravery and service that inspires others to do the same.
Each awardee receives a medal, certificate and cash. The brave hearts also get financial assistance through donations from philanthropists till they complete graduation. The ones opting for professional courses get scholarships as well.
Meanwhile, from Mizoram, 37 children have been awarded the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar. The first awardee was Lalthakima in 1987, after he rescued people from a collapsed quarry the previous year.
The MSCCW is the state council responsible for the selection of children from Mizoram and pays for all the travel and lodging expenses of the selected children.
The Bal Shakti Puraskar is given to children in the fields of innovation, social service, scholastic, sports, art and culture, and bravery and carries a medal, a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a certificate and a citation. This year 49 children from the age group of 5 to 18 years were awarded by the Indian President at a ceremony held at national capital.
