Guwahati: Amid stern opposition displayed by locals and anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) protesters, with massive rallies being conducted almost every passing day by leading civil organisations of the state, Guwahati — along with the rest of Assam — is all set to observe the 70th Republic Day celebrations on Sunday.
Addressing media persons on the preparations by the district administration over celebrations in Guwahati, Kamrup (Metro) deputy commissioner Biswajit Pegu on Tuesday informed that R-Day parade rehearsals — to be led by Assam Rifles personnel from neighbouring Meghalaya this year — are going on in full swing at the Khanapara Veterinary College Ground. The participation of the Assam Rifles team from Meghalaya will be an attempt to boost inter-regional armed forces coordination.
Pegu also informed that other participants of the parade, including Assam Police, Central Reserve Police Force, National Cadet Corps, Scouts and Guides and school students, are practising in full swing with uniforms at the ground.
Like every year, with the administration fixing up a particular theme to mark the celebrations, Pegu revealed that this year, it will be observed on the theme — ‘Freedom Movement”.
“Several cultural programmes have also been lined up for the R-Day celebrations in Guwahati and practices for the same are on in full swing,” Pegu added.
Taking about the security arrangements put in place for the celebrations, Pegu informed that security personnel are conducting round-up checks of the Khanapara ground every day. CCTV cameras been set up in and around the venue to capture all movements in the area.
“A three-tier security check has also been put in place for the R-Day celebrations,” Pegu added.
In an attempt to ease travel time of people coming to witness the R-Day celebrations at the ground, Pegu informed that the district authorities are also planning to arrange free ASTC shuttle buses that will carry people to the venue.
