Shillong: Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma on Monday said that the National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government is trying to convince everyone to agree and accept the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

Sangma’s response came after he was questioned whether the state government should also replicate the Kerala government in moving the Supreme Court against CAA. To this, Sangma responded that the question arises as to why the state government would do that in the first place and that it is futile for the Opposition to ask them to do so. Sangma said that it is abundantly clear beyond reasonable doubt that the government has tried to convince all.

“We have seen the reply of the chief minister during the debate in the House as he tried to convince everybody. We are not convinced because it opens up an unprecedented dangerous future and the ramifications thereof,” said Sangma.

When asked about the lull in the protest against CAA from the state Congress, the leader of the Opposition said that the issue should not be given a political colour as it is not a movement of the political party but of the people.

Stating that it does not revolve around religion either, Sangma said that there is a tendency to give separate types of interpretation that the protest is only by a certain group of people or only by the Congress to engage in anti-CAA rhetoric but it is the movement of the people.

It may be mentioned that the Opposition Congress had rallied its members at different districts of the state and staged mass protest in opposition to the CAA; however, with the passage of time the number of protests has come down to a great extent.
