A forest fire reportedly started around 1 pm at Shirui Peak in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Friday

Ukhrul: A forest fire reportedly broke out at Shirui Kashong, popularly known as Shirui peak, in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Friday, according to reports.

However, the cause of the fire and the amount of damage are yet to be ascertained till the time of filing this report.

Shirui Peak, which is home to the endangered Shirui Lily, the state flower, is known for its scenic beauty and rich fauna and flora.

As per reports, the fire started around 1 pm on Friday and slowly started engulfing the entire peak. Fear of the fire spreading to other places is still prevalent as the blaze is yet to be brought under control, reports said.

When inquired about the fire incident, Shirui villagers said they were clueless about who exactly set the fire. A hunt was still on for the culprit, they added.

As per a picture which was captured from the district headquarters, a peak was seen half burnt. The massive fire could also been seen from Ukhrul town.

Following the movement initiated by the villagers under the name of Shirui Kashong Area Forest Land Owner Conservancy (SKAFLOC) in 2017 to protect and preserve the Shirui Peak, they resolved not to take up any activities that could cause fire. As per the resolution, not a single fire incident has been reported from the peak till date, reports said.

As per reports, Ukhrul district was the most affected district by forest fire in Manipur with 1,399 cases during 2018-19.

People in the region use fires to burn forest wastes for farming purposes which often causes fire during the dry season. Forest fires remain a serious threat to forest resources and wetlands.

Creation of firelines, control of burning and public awareness on forest fire management with community participation are the need of the hour to mitigate the mounting man-made forest fire incidents.
