Guwahati: The sensational killing of a retired engineer from a residential area, just in front of the high security zone like Assam Secretariat, on Tuesday evening here has raised question mark over the functioning of city police once again.
Sensation prevails at Dispur Law College Road, almost 150-metre away from state power house, Janata Bhawan, following the killing of a 72-year-old retired engineer, Paresh Chandra Baruah, in his residence in the area on Tuesday.
The body, drenched in blood and wrapped in a piece of cloth placed upside down, of the deceased, who was alone at home, was recovered by his wife, Dr Garima Saikia Baruah, a medical practitioner, in his room which was locked from inside.
“I met him on road when he was coming from his evening walk on yesterday. He was taking some vegetables and probably a packet of milk. We discussed some normal things and then came back home,” one of the neighbors said.

Senior police officials have already visited the crime site and investigation is on.
“Police is trying to find the culprits. We have come to know that the incident came to the light when the victim’s wife reached home from her chamber at around 10.30 pm on Tuesday. The deceased used to live on the ground floor of his residence. We are looking for clues to understand what has happened. It will take some time as there are some vital clues,” said Guwahati Joint Commissioner of Police, Debraj Upadhyaya.
Both the sons of the deceased are reaching home probably on Thursday as they have already left for their respective homes based in US and in England respectively.
“The culprits did not steal anything from the house. So we are all questioning what was the intention to kill an old man who did not have any enmity with anyone,” one of the relatives said.
