Meghalaya: JNU alumni stage protest, condemn attack on students

Shillong: The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) alumni in Meghalaya staged a protest to stand in solidarity with the students and teachers at JNU on January 5. The demonstration was held at Firebrigade ground on Wednesday, where some prominent artists, filmmakers were seen taking part in the protest.

Condemning the violence taking place, the JNU alumni said, “What is seen is that the government is trying to suppress the voices of this country. So the youth of this country are aware of the things which are going on in this country. What we want is that our voices should be heard and our opinions should be respected.”

Tarun Bhartiya, member of Thma U Rangli Juki (TUR) said, “This government is behaving not like a government of the people of India but like a government of Sangh Parivar. Today, they are bringing kinds of laws tomorrow they can bring in anti-conversion law, what is going to happen? And that is why these protests are important if we do not express our opinion they will win.”

JNU alumni, Moses Kharbithai said, “Today we have come here to stand in solidarity with the students in JNU who have been attacked. And we want to say that we the people in Meghalaya stand together with them and demand the same. We have two demands one is that those people who had attacked JNU students and teachers should immediately be arrested. And secondly, we demand that the administration should remove the fee hike in the university.”

Recently, several protests were carried out in parts of the country slamming the BJP-led government for the attacks taking place in universities. Delhi Police was also slammed for not taking any action against those masked goons who had entered JNU campus attacking teachers and students.
