Imphal: The first edition of the state-level Kabui Gaan-Ngai, a post-harvest festival, begun on Wednesday at Sowumbung Kabui Khunjao in Imphal. The festival will end on January 12.

Organised by the state level Kabui Gaan Ngai Celebration Committee under the theme ‘Kabui Gaan Ngai is the Cultural Integrity of Manipur’, the festival marked the beginning of the New Year and invoke god’s blessings for a safe passage of the year.

Speaking at the event as the chief guest, minister for consumer affairs, food and public distribution (CAF&PD) Karam Shyam lauded the organising committee for bringing people together in celebrating the colourful cultural event.

Stressing on the importance of preserving the aged-old traditions and culture of the Kabui, the minister also appealed to the gathering to extend support to the youths while safeguarding the customs and traditions in order to keep the identity alive.

“We should pass on the rich traditions and let know the real development to the future generation” he said.

During an inaugural function, dance troupes from various groups performed traditional dances of the Kabui community while reviving the ancestral times through its dance forms.

Festival revelries were seen lively and vibrant as they adorned with their colourful traditional costumes.

Gaan-Ngai festival has been observing since long by the Zeliangrong community, however, this year with state government’s ardent initiative in preserving the rich old traditions of Manipur organised at a state-level in a grand manner.

The diverse culture of the state and its peaceful co-existence was also highlighted during the event with the presence of various leaders of the CSOs, including MANPAC convenor Dilipkumar Yumnamcha, UCM general secretary Athouba Khuraicham among others.

Also known as Chakaan Gaan-Ngai, the festival is celebrated annually by the Zeliangrong community across Assam, Nagaland and Manipur.
