Guwahati: The Gauhati University Teachers’ Association along with Post-Graduate Students’ Union and Law College Students’ Union organised a sit-in demonstration in protest against the violence that occurred at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi on Sunday.
The teachers’ association carried out a peaceful demonstration at the new arts building in the Gauhati University premises. Speeches were made raising concerns about the recent violence that have transpired in Indian universities in the last one year.
“The hooligans must be arrested and tried as per law,” said Partha Pratim Das, president of Gauhati University Law College Students’ Union.
JNU is one the premier institutes of India and such an act has been condemned throughout the nation. Professor Akhil Ranjan Dutta, president of Gauhati University Teachers’ Association, said, “We have to have the moral strength, moral solidarity with Jawaharlal Nehru University if we are really committed to the cause of democracy, to the cause of secularism, to the cause of social justice and to the cause of upliftment of the poorer sections of the society and also for the cause of diversity of the country.”
The demonstration was held for an hour in which professors of various departments addressed the crowd voicing their opinion over the incident.
Events that occurred in JNU on Sunday caused a stir throughout the nation. Students were reportedly beaten up brutally by masked “goons” who entered the university premises and even hostels creating an atmosphere of violence and chaos.
One of the videos that is doing the rounds on social media shows JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh bleeding from what has been seen, to be a blow to her head. In another incident, Suchitra Sen, a member of JNU faculty, was taken to the hospital with severe head injuries. What erupted on the JNU campus has been condemned all over the nation and people have come out to the streets yet again to show their support to all the students who have become victims of the act of “barbarity”.
