Kokrajhar: A hardcore cadre and ‘platoon commander’ of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland-Saoraigwra faction (NDFB-S) was neutralised in an encounter with security forces at New Basti near Dwimalupara Kungring in Assam’s Chirang district along the India-Bhutan border area.

According to the police, after gaining specific information, the Indian army unit in Chirang and Assam police launched a joint operation on Sunday in the New Basti of Dwimalupara in Khungring of Chirang.

During the operation, when one of the ambush party members saw an armed militant approaching towards them, he asked him to stop. The millitant opened fire at the team from sophisticated weapons and tried to run away. He was chased upon and was asked to stop, but he didn’t, and instead, open fired at the ambush party. The joint team retaliated with controlled fire by exercising right of self-defence.

After firing from both sides stopped, the area was searched and the suspected militant was found injured. He was immediately shifted to JSB Civil Hospital in Kajalgaon where he was declared brought dead.

The individual was identified as hardcore NDFB-S militant Sansula Basumatary alias B Sotbangsha, a self-styled platoon commander of the 16 Battalion of the insurgent group. He was active in Chirang district and was responsible for extortion, recruitment of new cadres and anti-national activities.

During the search of encounter site, two pistols, two grenades, warlike stores and a huge sum of money were recovered.

The development has come as a major setback to the militant group and will go a long way in enhancing the safety of the civilians and the moral ascendency maintained by the security forces, an official said.
