With festive season in mind, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha president Binoy Tamang requests members to make Darjeeling ‘strike-free zone’; to organise protest marches in 2 phases later
Gangtok: The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) has appealed its youth wing -- Gorkha Janmukti Yuwa Morcha -- to withdraw its general strike called on December 29, keeping in mind the festive season.
In a press note dated December 26, 2019, GJM president Binoy Tamang said that keeping in view of Christmas, Dukpa New Year, Sikkimese New Year, visit of Shri Satpal Maharaj to Darjeeling and inconvenience caused to tourists, he requested for Darjeeling to be a "strike-free zone".
The statement added that there will be an alternative political programme where thousands of youth will march against the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizens (NRC). The first one will be on Saturday, December 28, from Darjeeling to Kurseong, and another one on January 5 where youths will rally from Kurseong to Darjeeling along with GJM leaders and other frontal organisations.
