Imphal: Normal life was affected in Manipur following a 12-hour state-wide general strike called by the Left parties, including CPI, CPI(M), RSP and Forward Bloc, against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

The strike was organised from 6 am to 6 pm as part of the nationwide anti-CAA movement call given by the Left parties on Thursday.

Speaking with EastMojo, secretary of Manipur state council of CPI, L Sotinkumar, alleged CAA is an anti-Constitutional and anti-people Act.

“And after passing the Bill as an Act in Parliament, more than 30 lakh Hindus who had entered our region illegally is set to get a citizenship. And once they enter Manipur, we, the indigenous population, will lose our identity and culture,” said Sotinkumar.

Therefore, until the withdrawal of this Act, we will continue our movement, he added.

As part of the protest against CAA, a sit-in protest was also held at Lilong Leikai in Imphal by the All India Tanzeem-E-Insaan (AITI), Islamic Cultural and Research Organisation (ICRO) and ANJUMAN under the aegis of the Left parties.

Later, the protesters took to a street and blocked the Lilong Bazaar road while shouting slogans against the Act.

National secretary of AITI, Alahuddin, also alleged that CAA is targeting only one religion and some minority communities.

“We are the sovereign, socialist and democratic republic and we respect the Indian Constitution. But we cannot respect CAA which does not accommodate every religion and community of the country,” he added.

The protesters also warned about further agitation if the Centre failed to revoke the Act. However, no untoward of incidents were reported till this report was filling.
