Tinsukia: The police arrested pro-talks ULFA leader Jiten Dutta on Wednesday in connection with an arson incident of the RSS office in Margherita in Assam’s Tinsukia district on December 12.
The arrest came on a day when his three-day police remand in connection with a case at Tinsukia Sadar police station ended on December 18 after he was arrested on December 15.
According to highly-placed sources in Assam police, Dutta has been taken to Guwahati for further investigation. “He has been arrested in connection with arsoning and vandalism of RSS office during the CAA protests and violence there after,” the source added.
A case (374/19) has been registered at Margherita police station under Sections 120 (B), 121, 147, 148, 149, 353, 454, 427 and 435 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Sources said, “The police produced him in court which sent him to 5-day police remand.”

Protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) turned violent in upper Assam on December 11 immediately after Rajya Sabha passed the contentious legislation. Since then, over 50 government institutions including Chabua and Panitola railway stations, post office, circle office and United Bank of India branch at Chabua, labour office in Tinsukia had been either vandalised or torched or both. Besides, the CM’s residence in Dibrugarh and BJP MLA’s residence in the same was attacked, Chabua MLA residence was set on fire and RSS office in few towns set on fire, among major incidents of violence reported in the region.

Meanwhile, in neighbouring Dibrugarh district, curfew was relaxed for 14 hours from 6 am to 8 pm.
The Dibrugarh district administration has informed that the office of the circle officer, Chabua revenue circle will be functioning temporarily from the office building of Model Rural Health Traning Research Unit near RHTC, Chabua with effect from December 19 until further order.
