Guwahati: Assam MP from Nowgong constituency Pradyut Bordoloi on Tuesday claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is taking advantage of the ongoing agitation against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in the state and targeting Congress activists by detaining them for no reasons.

“The BJP is trying hard to establish that the protests, which are happening throughout the state, are the handiwork of the Congress. They are also purposefully targeting the Congress activists and sweeping down the student leaders, youth Congress leaders, etc, ” Bordoloi told EastMojo.

“In order to establish that the protests have been incited by the Congress, they are arbitrarily picking up the party workers and slapping them with offences which are non-bailable under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), besides sending the workers to jail,” the MP alleged.

Bordoloi, who is a Congress MP, further said, “The Assam state police is also hand in glove with the BJP and it has been supporting chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal by covering many illegal activities carried under his nose for a long time.”

As per Bordoloi, “The police while taking advantage of the present situation were arresting Congress workers now because the party had before the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill agitation, started their own movement against chief minister Sonowal for his alleged involvement in large scale illegal coal mining, deforestation and destruction of rain forest in Margherita area in Assam’s Tinsukia district.”

The MP also alleged that the local police officials from the area also made huge sums of money out of those illegal activities.

“The Tinsukia Superintendent of Police (SP) along with the local police station officials has a grudge for the Congress workers from Margherita because due to the Congress they (police) were unable to run the racket efficiently and seamlessly,” Bordoloi alleged.

Meanwhile, the Tinsukia SP, Siladitya Chetia, when contacted, said: “People can make allegations against anyone; however, it would be better if the one making the accusations can also substantiate his or her claims.”
