Shillong/New Delhi: Nagaland Governor R N Ravi has been given additional charge of Meghalaya as Govornor Tathagata Roy proceeds on leave.
“The President of India is pleased to appoint Shri R.N. Ravi, Governor of Nagaland to discharge the functions of the Governor of Meghalaya, in addition to his own duties, during the absence on leave of Shri Tathagata Roy, Governor of Meghalaya.,” a press communique from the President’s Secretariat issued a short while ago said.
This move comes within days of Meghalaya Governor Roy tweeting “A democracy is NECESSARILY DIVISIVE. If you don’t want it go to North Korea”. This stirred a row with not just the opposition Congress demanding his removal but even the BJP leadership of Meghalaya condemning the statement.
Massive protests were seen outside the Governor’s House in Shillong after Roy’s tweet. Roy is known to create controversies with his tweets and outspoken nature.
Meanwhile, situation in Shillong is under control. No protests or any untoward incident reported from any part of Shillong so far. Curfew has been relaxed for 13 hours (6am-7pm) on Monday. Long queues are seen outside ATMs. Many ATMs are already out of cash. Internet services remain suspended for the fourth day.
