Guwahati: In protest against the Centre’s move on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has called for an 11-hour ‘Northeast bandh’ starting from 6 am on December 10, the day when the contentious Bill is likely to be tabled in Rajya Sabha.
As per sources, the decision for the bandh was taken in an executive meeting of NESO held in Guwahati, Assam on Friday. However, the students’ body has kept Nagaland out of the purview of the bandh as people in the state are celebrating Hornbill Festival in Kohima.
The executive meeting of NESO that was attended by leaders of student organisations from across Northeast India, including Khasi Students’ Union, Manipur Students’ Union and Naga Student’s Federation, among others, was held to discuss about their future course of action on the proposed legislation.
On December 9, the Bill is likely to be brought on the floor of Lok Sabha where the ruling BJP has a clear majority.
