Assam food and civil supply minister Phani Bhusan Choudhury running away from a party meeting fearing his safety

Guwahati: To avoid the raging protesters against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), Assam food and civil supply minister and Asom Gana Parisad (AGP) leader Phani Bhusan Choudhury was forced to run away from a party meeting fearing his safety in Manikpur area under Bongaigaon district on Saturday.

The incident occurred when a section of party workers staged a protest at Manikpur and waved black flags as the minister decided not to comment on the controversial issue of CAB.

Anticipating physical attack, the minister immediately ran away from the ongoing meeting and was seen running towards his vehicle.

After the minister’s escape from the spot, members of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parisad (AJYCP) and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) staged protests by burning tires and blocking National Highway 31.

In a similar incident, Union minister Rameswar Teli was confronted by AASU protesters in Naharkatia and was forced to turn back and leave the spot on Saturday.

The Union minister for food processing was on his way to the town in Dibrugarh district to take stock of the preparation of the Jaipur Rain Festival when AASU activists and locals heckled the minister and shouted ‘go back’ slogans.

Sensing trouble, the minister fled from the spot with the help of his security personnel.
