Tinsukia: Two officials of Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) were arrested by the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) police station from Assam’s Tezpur town on Friday night for demanding and accepting bribe.
The accused, assistant general manager of testing and commissioning (T&C) division Prakash Ranjan Dutta and assistant manager of T&C division Jatin Kr Dhekial Phukan, had allegedly demanded bribe of Rs 1 lakh from an electric contractor for giving clearances for installing a solar meter system and to activate it at the manufacturing unit of Dabur India Limited in Tezpur. Dutta was caught red handed while accepting bribe of Rs 80,000.
This is the third corruption case cracked by the directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption branch in less than a month.
According to sources, based on the complaint by Diganta Goswami, who approached the ACB police station in the directorate of vigilance & anti-corruption department, a trap was laid and Dutta was arrested accepting a bribe of Rs 80,000 from the complainant. “The accused Dutta had called the complainant for handing over the bribe amount on Friday evening and a trap was laid by the ACB team and the accused was caught red-handed in possession of the bribe amount. The money has been seized from the possession of the accused by the ACB team,” said sources.
“Based on available evidence, the FIR named Phukan as co-accused,” said sources and added, “On Saturday, he was examined by ACB officials at his temporary residence situated at Nagaon for his involvement in demand of bribe from the complainant. Later he was arrested for his involvement in the case, after observing proper formalities.
Appealing citizens to come forward and share information of corruption with senior officers of the directorate, Directorate of IGP, Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Anurag Tankha told EastMojo, that the department will not spare corrupt government officials.

Sources said that in this connection a case has been registered under Section 7 (a)/13(1)(b)/13(2) of PC Act. “The arrested accused shall be forwarded before the court of special judge, Assam in Guwahati today,” sources added.
