Kovind said those sentenced to death under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act should not be allowed under the purview of mercy petition
New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday said that there shouldn't be any mercy plea for child rapists, and Parliament must look into it.
Speaking at an event in Rajasthan, Kovind said those sentenced to death under the POCSO (Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences) should not be allowed under the purview of mercy petition.
The statement comes at a time when crimes against woman are at a high.
The President tweeted: "Women's safety is a very serious issue. The incidents of demonic attacks on girls shake the conscience of the country."
He added that it is the responsibility of every parent to instil among boys the feeling of respect for women.
Talking about women safety, the President said that there should be no mercy for rapists and crimes against women have been shaking the spirit of the country. He added, "I am sure you share my sentiments but the final decision on this constitutional amendment lies with the Parliament”.
Earlier this year, the POCSO Act was amended to add death penalty for aggravated sexual assault against children.
