Guwahati: The pair of giraffes, that were brought to Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden from other parts of the country, got their names on Friday as they were officially welcomed by state forest minister Parimal Suklabaidya and other dignitaries in Guwahati.
With suggestions from leading journalists Kanak Sen Deka and Pranoy Bordoloi, the zoo authorities named the female and male giraffe ‘Rongali’ and ‘Kul Nandan’, respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Assam minister Parimal Suklabaidya said, “The zoo authority is leaving no stone unturned with all support from the animal veterinary department to make the zoo one of the top tourism destinations of Northeast, at the same time ensuring the good health and long life of the animals.”
Speaking with EastMojo, zoo division forest officer (DFO) Tejas Mariswamy said, “The female giraffe was brought from Patna and the male one from Mysore. The last time a giraffe was seen here was in 2011 and since then there were many demands from the people as they wanted to see a giraffe here. Luckily, this time we got the required support from the government, forest ministers and our department head and we got two of the giraffes.”
“We are all very happy as after eight years giraffes have come to our zoo. We have specialised keepers here who look after the two giraffes and we are confident that we will be able to maintain them very well,” added the DFO.
According to zoo officials, the Guwahati Zoo will be turned into an ‘African habitat’, where three species – zebra, giraffe and ostrich — will stay together. They will get the ostrich from Chennai Zoo and the zebra will arrive in the month of March next year.
When asked why they want to keep the three species together, the DFO replied, “We want to make it a habitat concept zoo and we don’t want to keep species separately. When we will keep the three species together, they will also feel it as a natural place.”
