Diphu: The indefinite strike called by students representing various organisations to demand 100% reservation for Scheduled Tribe (Hills) and indigenous youths of Karbi Anglong district in the Grade III and Grade IV job categories of vacancies in the upcoming Diphu Medical College in Assam entered the third day on Wednesday.
The indefinite sit-in demonstration that started on Monday is still underway in front of the Semson Sing Engti Memorial Park of Diphu town on Wednesday.
Speaking with EastMojo, Karbi Students’ Association (KSA) general secretary Thangsing Timun said that 100% job reservation to ST(H) and indigenous youths was among the poll promises made by Assam health and finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during his election campaign for the recently-held Lok Sabha elections.
Criticising Sarma for his failure in fulfilling his promises made to the people of Karbi Anglong district during his election campaign, Timun further said that in the recently declared results for Grade III and Grade IV jobs of Diphu Medical College by the authorities, very less number of students from the hill district were selected for the posts and most of the those selected candidates are from other parts of the state.
“Sarma has betrayed the people of Karbi Anglong by failing to fulfill his promises. Now he has forgotten to fulfill these,” the KSA general secretary alleged.
Interestingly, minister Sarma during his visit to Diphu Medical College on Monday told the media that the medical college concerned is not for solving the unemployment problem in the district. Rather, it should be used to solve only public interest.
He further went on to say that if the state government concentrates on providing job opportunities to locals, then the college has to be closed down, as the government can’t compromise on the meritorious candidates.
“I don’t want to be the next Rakesh Paul and I don’t want to go to jail,” minister Sarma said.
Assam Hills Medical College and Research Institute or Diphu Medical College is a first-of-its-kind institute in Karbi Anglong which is scheduled to inaugurated by Prime Minister later this year.
