Imphal: A combined team of Manipur Police and Assam Rifles on Sunday arrested two persons in connection with illegal possession of arms and ammunition in Imphal, said reports.

According to reports, following reliable information received over the transportation of sophisticated weapons being moved to Imphal from Nagaland, security forces launched a mobile search and frisking operation in and around Koreingei and Mantripukhri areas along National Highway 102.

During the checking of vehicles, two persons were arrested in connection with illegal possessions of arms, including an AK 56 rifle loaded with 20 live rounds of ammunition, two AK 56 rifle magazines and 60 live ammunition rounds, said reports.

The search team also recovered a Toyota Innova SUV along with two mobile phones, two SIM cards and two wallets.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Khupngaishuan Paite (25) of Siloam Veng, Churachandpur (currently staying at Bungmual village, Churachandpur) and Songthianlam Paite (34) of Bukpi village, Thanlon (currently staying at New Lamka, Churachandpur).

As per an official statement, the arrested individuals revealed that they were on their way back to Churachandpur after receiving the arms and ammunition from an unidentified person in Dimapur based on the instruction of Khupngaishuan Paite’s father-in-law.

During the interrogation, the two individuals also revealed that they were earlier involved in smuggling arms and ammunition.

A case has been registered against two individuals at Heingaing Police Station.
