Tinsukia: Troops of 9 Assam Rifles killed the operation commander of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Reformation) (NSCN-R) at the jungles of Old Changlang, around 6 km east of Ngai town, in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district during an encounter on Saturday evening.
The deceased militant has been identified as self-styled Captain Akham Chang.
According to highly-placed sources, based on an input on movement of a group of four militants at old Shallang — once an important NSCN camp destroyed by Assam Rifles in 2016 — an operation was launched. “An eye was kept on the group and an ambush was laid in the jungles,” the sources said.
“The militants opened fired on the security forces when they were intercepted by Assam Rifles,” sources said, adding: “Chang was killed during a short gun battle and security forces recovered an AK-47 rifle along with 60 rounds of ammunition.”
His body was recovered couple of hours after the encounter took place. “The remaining rebels fled under the cover of darkness and operations are on to intercept them,” another source added.
Sources told EastMojo that Chang was associated with NSCN for the past 19 years, and was with the NSCN-R faction for the last three years. “He is an IED expert and operation commander of Changlang and was involved in a series of activity,” sources added.
