Agartala: Following his success in mustard oil cultivation, Biswajit Majumder, a young farmer from the remote hamlet of Sabroom area under south district of Tripura, has been conferred with best innovative farmer of Tripura award by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) recently and this has created hopes among the new farmers of the state.
Speaking with EastMojo, Biswajit Majumder said, “Mustard seed has a huge demand and it is very profitable for farmers. A total of 2,000 kg of mustard oil was produced during the last year. The mustard oil cultivation was done covering a total of 17 kani area. Mustard seed is profitable because mustard seed used for mustard oil production as well as a mustard cake too.”
The market rate of mustard oil is Rs 120 per litre and mustard cake can sold in the local market at an amount of Rs 30 per kg. To get one litter mustard oil, the requirement of mustard seed is 3.5 kg. At least 600 gm mustard cake can be collected from 1 kg mustard seed.
“The mustard cake can be used as fish feed and cow feed. So, mustard seed production is profitable in our state Tripura,” he said.
The northeastern state of Tripura has become a surplus producer of certified HYV paddy and mustard seeds. In the case of mustard, the SRR is 50%. Steps have been taken to achieve self-sufficiency in HYV pulses, groundnut, and sesame seeds also.
KK Barman, joint director, ICAR, Tripura said that there is a good opportunity for Tripura farmers in order to earn a good income by means of mustard seed production.
He said, “A total of eight sucking machines for mustard oil are already donated by ICAR Tripura to farmers as a part of the experiment. The endeavour of ICAR in case of mustard oil production has achieved success in Tripura. So, Tripura farmers can able to choose mustard for production and increase their income as double.”
A total of the 7,893-hectare area is cultivating mustard and total production of mustard seed is 6,630 MT in the state. The yield of mustard seed is 840 kg per hectare here in Tripura and there is an opportunity in order to open the mustard oil processing centre in the state.
