‘Attack’ on Assam scribe: Journalist body demands high-level probe

Guwahati: Condemning the suspected attack on senior journalist Naresh Mitra by unknown miscreants in Guwahati recently, the Journalist Federation of Assam (JFA) has demanded the state government to book the culprits involved in the incident as soon as possible.

In a statement issued by its president, the association has condemned the attack on Mitra, a senior journalist working with The Times of India’s Guwahati bureau, by unidentified miscreants on Friday night and has demanded for a high-level inquiry into the shocking incident.

The journalists’ association in its statement has also offered their prayers seeking an early recovery of the senior scribe, who is currently undergoing treatment at Nemcare Hospital in Guwahati. The JFA has also wished for early recovery of Mitra so that he can reveal what had actually happened with him on that fateful night once he regains his consciousness.

Mitra, 42, is currently at the intensive care unit (ICU) of Nemcare Hospital in Guwahati after he sustained grievous head injuries in an “attack” by unidentified miscreants on that night.

Well known for his frequent environmental reporting, Mitra was rescued by locals in a critical state with intense bleeding from his head at Rupnagar Shiva Mandir area under Bhangagarh police station in Guwahati.

As per reports, some unidentified miscreants attacked Mishra from behind around 10.30 pm on Friday while he was returning home in his bicycle after completing his work at The Times of India bureau in ABC locality of the city.

Locals, who spotted Mitra, immediately shifted him to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for emergency aid where he was slightly able to speak but gradually lost his sense.

However, later upon being informed, Mitra’s family members admitted him to the ICU of Nemcare Hospital the same night and since then he is under critical care.

Although, initially, it was thought to be a case of hit and run, doctors who conducted head surgery of Mitra on Sunday revealed that the injuries in his skull are similar to that of an assault, hence raising suspicion to the whole incident.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered and Guwhati city police are trying to collect CCTV footage from the accident spot to find out what had actually happened on that fateful night.
