Tinsukia: In yet another incident of “loot”, unidentified miscreants opened fire at and attacked a businessman in Dhekiajuli in Assam’s Sonitpur district before fleeing with his bag containing money on Sunday evening.
The victim has been identified as Dharamchand Pandya, who runs a shop in the area called New BM Stores.
The incident comes within a week after a businessman’s employee, Om Prakash Agarwal, was shot dead in Dibrugarh town of upper Assam. The police claimed the role of a “gang of dacoits” behind the incident who decamped with a bag containing cash.
According to sources, the incident took place around 7 pm when Pandya, who was returning from his shop with his daily sale cash, was attacked in front of his residence under ward number 7 of the town. “The miscreants fired in the air and attacked him with a stone, injuring him on his head, before fleeing with the bag containing cash.”
“Police recovered a fired case, a cap and a pair of slippers from the spot,” sources added.
As per sources, the police have failed to identify the miscreants involved in the incident so far.
“The rising incidents of loot and attacks on businessman and snatching have become a great cause of worry and is creating a sense of insecurity among us,” a trader, on condition of anonymity, said.
Attempts to speak to Sonitpur police turned futile.
