Tinsukia: Four persons, including a woman, who were part of an ill-fated group returning from a marriage ceremony, died while more than half a dozen persons were injured as the passenger vehicle they were travelling in collided head-on with a coal-laden truck on National Highway 38 in Digboi in Assam’s Tinsukia district on Sunday night.
The deceased have been identified as Bishu Dad (driver), Jairam Shah, Jaleshwar Giri and Urmila Devi.
Speaking with EastMojo, officer-in-charge of Digboi police station Sanjib Saikia said that a coal-laden truck (bearing number AS01JC2935) coming from Margherita collided with a Magic passenger vehicle (AS23CC3431) coming from the opposite direction head-on at Powai. “Four persons died on the spot while eight persons have been injured.”

“The incident took place on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday,” he added.
According to sources, the impact of the accident was such that the passenger vehicle got crushed and it took hours to extract the body of the driver. “The vehicle had to be cut by using gas-cutter to extract his body,” the sources said.
The truck driver fled from the spot after the accident, the sources said.
“The group, hailing from Jagun in Tinsukia district, was returning from a marriage ceremony at Hatiali in Dibrugarh district in a reserved Magic vehicle,” the sources said, adding: “The injured, including an eight-year-old boy, were taken to the civil hospital in Margherita. Those critical have been shifted to Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh.”
The police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.
