Guwahati: A student from Japan allegedly committed suicide in the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) located in Amingaon area of Assam on Thursday evening.

The deceased has been identified as Kota Onoda, a student of Gifu University of Japan who was interning under a student exchange programme and was about to return home towards November end.

The 23-year-old student was found hanging in the bathroom of the Lohit hostel of the institute. Onoda joined IIT-G in August for a three-month internship at the bio-sciences and bio-engineering department.

According to sources, some friends of Onoda tried to contact him, but his phone was switched off. Following this, they immediately contacted the authorities of the institution and also visited his room only to find his body hanging from the bathroom ventilator.

Speaking with EastMojo, assistant registrar (public relations officer) of IIT-G, Labanu Konwar, informed that the incident came to light around 3 on Thursday afternoon after the deceased did not respond to several calls made by his batch mates.

Konwar further informed that although there is not much being known for the reason of suicide, the local police of Amingaon in North Guwahati are carrying out an investigation into the incident.

The IIT official also informed that all legal procedures of informing the deceased’s native country about the tragedy through the Union ministry of home affairs (MHA) and ministry of external affairs (MEA) have been done by the institution.
