Shillong: In an unplanned raid, carried out by a joint team of district administration and East Jaintia Hills police in last one week, 95 unclaimed coal trucks have been seized from various locations in the district.
While speaking with EastMojo, East Jaintia Hills SP Vivekanand Singh said that this is one of the largest seizures made during his tenure. The seized trucks were all along the highway in the district from Khliehriat, Lumshnong, Umkiang, Malidor.
“Firstly, we will try to identify whose vehicles they belong to. Then we will issue notices to them to appear before the IO and how their trucks reached here. And then we will try to ascertain the owner of the coal which is in the truck. We will record their statements and may even arrest, it depends on how the case evolves. More raids will be carried out in the days to come, once we get any leads we will carry out a raid,” said Singh.
The seized trucks were loaded in the district itself and some had passed through the jungle around 600 meters from the highway, which hinted that there was something fishy, according to the SP.
Seven separate cases have been registered and investigation has been started. Efforts are being taken to identify the owners, drivers, and handymen of the vehicles as well as loaded coal and take strict action against them as per Indian Penal Code, MMDR Act and other relevant laws.
