Assam: Protest against CAB intensifies, effigies burnt in Tinsukia

Tinsukia: With the onset of the Winter Session of Parliament, the pitch of protest in Assam has gone high from Day 1.

On Monday, Muttock Yuba Chatra Sonmilon burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, home minister Amit Shah, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and state finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Thana Charali in Tinsukia to mark their protest against the government’s decision to enact Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 as a law.

The government has listed the controversial bill at serial number 16 in the items of government business identified for being taken up in both houses of Parliament during the Winter Session which got underway on Monday.

“We shall not accept the Bill under any circumstances,” Durjay Baruah of Muttock Yuba Chatra Sonmilon told EastMojo. “The Bill is against the interest of the socio-economic fabric of Assam. We will not allow any illegal migrant, religion does not matter,” he said.

“We also reiterate our demand to provide Scheduled Tribe status to us. The government had promised us to grant the status within one year of coming to power but it has betrayed us,” added Baruah.

The six communities of Assam demanding ST status include Morans, Tai Ahoma, Muttocks, Sutia, Koch-Rajbongshis and the tea tribes.
