Tinsukia: The special investigating team (SIT) of Arunachal Pradesh arrested a self-styled senior ‘commander’ of ULFA-Independent) involved in extorting money from high-profile politicians from Northeast, informed a press release from the office of director general of police (DGP), Arunachal Pradesh.
The militant has been identified as Ranjan Bikash Borgohain alias Bikash alias Ramen Barua, a resident of Dibrugarh district of Assam.
“Letters addressed to politicians of various political parties on the letterhead of ULFA with signatures of deputy commander-in-chief of ULFA-I Drishti Rajkhowa was recovered from him,” the press release stated.
The release said two diaries having personal details of prominent political figures, five debit and credit cards of various banks and three mobile phones were seized from him. “After putting sustained efforts and raids in Delhi, Dibrugarh and Guwahati over a period of one month, the accused was finally tracked and arrested. He has been produced before court which has remanded him to seven days in police custody,” the release said.
However, the press release did not mention the date, time, place of arrest and the circumstances under which the accused was arrested.
During interrogation, it was revealed that he was earlier arrested by Delhi Police under threatening and extortion charges and sent to Tihar jail. “His link to Ulfa dates back to 1985,” the release added.
