Guwahati: The District Transport Officer (DTO) of Assam’s Biswanath on Thursday closed down at least five automobile dealers for operating “illegally” without any valid trade documents despite being served repeated warnings by the authorities concerned.

Making a sudden visit to all automobile dealers operating in the district, Biswanath DTO Mehtabuddin Ali on Wednesday put a halt to business of five automobile showrooms as they were unable to provide an appropriate ‘trading certificate’ provided from the district transport administration.

Conducting the sudden raid, the DTO also seized a total of three ‘demo’ cars from Krishna Hyundai Automobile dealers, a car each from RD Motors and Asutosh Motors, five Tata Magic vehicles from Glorious Motors Agency and five e-rickshaws from NG Enterprise.

According to reports, in August this year, the transport authorities held a meeting with the owners of the automobile dealers and apprised them of the requirement of a valid ‘trading certificate’ from the authorities concerned within a span four months. The district administration further warned the owners that failing to provide a valid TC within the stipulated period will lead to a shutdown and seizure of their business establishments by the authorities.

Speaking with media persons, Ali said that despite repeated warnings and notices from the district transport administration, the owners of the automobile showrooms continued to violate rules.

“They are running an illegal business establishment as they still possess a TC from Sonitpur and Lakhimpur transport authorities despite being apprised that it is invalid as it is a different district now and they should avail the same from Biswanath transport authorities,” Ali said.

He further stated that the car and automobile dealers would not be able to do any kind of business until they apply for and facilitate a valid TC from the district transport authorities.

On August 15, 2015, Biswanath was declared a separate district after it was carved out of Sonitpur district where it was a sub-division.
