Shillong: In the run-up to the National Games 2022 to be held in Meghalaya, the state government has decided to organise Meghalaya Games 2019 from December 16 to 21. The event will also select players from respective fields and train them for the National Games.

While addressing the media, Meghalaya sports minister Banteidor Lyngdoh said, “The first meeting of the organising committee of the Meghalaya Games 2019 has decided to organise the games from December 16 to 21. This game will include 14 disciplines — archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, billiards & snooker, karate, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, wushu, and judo.”

Lyngdoh also informed that this game is being held after a gap of 13 years, and said that the government aims to promote sports in the state and will work on promoting it annually.

Approximately 2,500 athletes are expected to take part in Meghalaya Games 2019.

Players from the state games will be selected for National Games 2022 and will also be given proper training for the National Games.

The government will spend Rs 60 lakh to Rs 80 lakh for the Meghalaya Games.

“The government is determined to make the National Games happen in 2022 in the state. The government is working day and night to get the work done. Our government is very serious about this as this also coincides with the state completing 50 years,” said Lyngdoh.

Winners of the Meghalaya Games will be awarded medals and not cash prize. The games will be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Polo.
