Agartala: In a move aimed to woo the people of the indigenous population ahead of the ensuing Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, the Tripura government has decided to give a holiday on the birthday of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya on August 19 from 2020 calendar year.

A notification issued by the department of general administration (SA) of the state government on behalf of the governor on Thursday said.

Earlier, in July last year, the Central government on the request of the state government had renamed the Agartala airport after king Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, who constructed the airport in the year 1942.

According to the notification, there will be altogether 23 government holidays including the birthday of Maharaja Bir Bikram on August 19. However, the government employees will lose two important holidays next year, as the ‘Maha Ashtami’ and ‘Maha Navami’ during ‘Durga Puja’ will fall on fourth Saturday and Sunday on October 24 and 25, respectively.

Speaking with EastMojo, royal scion of Tripura, Pradyot Kishore Manikya Deb Barman, welcomed the decision of the state government on announcing holiday on Maharaja’s birthday.

“The announcement was pending for a long time. In 2008, when Maharaja’s 108th birthday was being celebrated, they had gone to the then chief minister to announce holiday on Maharajas Birth Day but that time it was rejected.”

“We have been celebrating May Day, Karl Marx, Guru Nanak Birthday, they are great people indeed but they are not from this soil. So the state needs its own local heroes and there is no one is better than Maharaja Bir Bikram,” Deb Barman said.

“I welcome the decision and also I am pleasantly surprised that the government has announced a holiday on my grandfather Bir Bikram Birthday. I guess, we are still relevant to many in this state today. However, my fight for our people will continue,” Deb Barman added.
