Tinsukia: An elephant has gone on a rampage in Assam’s Tinsukia district, trampling one farmer to death, and damaging his house, said police officials on Friday.
The incident comes a week after a pachyderm, named Laden, trampled five persons — including three woman and a minor — to death in lower Assam’s Goalpara district.
The deceased has been identified as 45-year old Pradeep Gogoi, a resident of No. 2 Upper Phaning village under Lekhapani police station of Digboi forest range.
Speaking with EastMojo, officer-in-charge of Lekhapani PS Puranjoy Bora said, “The incident took place around 11 pm on Thursday, at a time when the victim had stepped out of home to urinate.”
“A wild elephant first crushed his house before coming face to face with the victim. The victim fled to nearby jungle in a bid to save himself, Bora said, adding, his body was recovered on Friday morning, around 400 metres from his house after villagers went out to look for him.”
Bora said, the victim’s wife was at home and luckily escaped the attack by the elephant. “We have taken the dead body for post-mortem and informed the forest officials.”
Digboi divisional forest officer Antique Rahman said, “This is the first such kind of incident reported in this belt. We have increased patrolling and looking into steps to be taken to avoid man-elephant conflict.”
