Crime against women down 8%, conviction rate up 39%: Tripura CM

Agartala: Crime rate against women has reduced, while the conviction rate has increased in the last 19 months’ regime of the BJP-IPFT government in Tripura.

Announcing this during the inaugural session of a three-day capacity building programme of police officers on “Investigation of Crime Against Women” at Pragna Bhawan in Agartala, chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb said that crime against women has decreased by 8% in the state after the new government took charge in the state in March last year.

“The conviction rate has increased from 29% to 39% while crime against women has reduced by 8%. Earlier, the state government didn’t give a free hand to the police to work on crime cases against women. After the new government was formed, for the first time, a convict was awarded death penalty,” Deb said.

He also said that now the police and the government have assured zero percent tolerance on crime against women and the accused person is arrested immediately after receiving an FIR.

“We don’t want any crime against women in the state. Now, the situation is developing. The number of crimes against women is starting decreasing. This is a good sign for a state. Our government is committed to delivering good governance in the state,” chief minister Deb said.

He also directed all the NGOs participated in the event to look after the newly married couple to prevent cruelty to women.

“If the NGOs of our state can do follow up to the newly married couples so that we can reduce the numbers of women cruelty in the state”, Deb said.

Tripura director general of police (DGP), Akhil Kumar Shukla said that they have also intensified the beat patrolling in the state to prevent crimes against women.
