Aizwal: Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga on Friday vowed to make Mizoram a role model for other Northeast states in terms of development.

Inaugurating 14 board offices under the state’s flagship programme ‘Socio-Economic Development Policy (SEDP)‘ at the Secretariat Building Annex-II in Aizawl, Zoramthanga said that the state government would introduce a unique as well as unusual system to usher in all-round development.

“We will make massive effort to make Mizoram a role model and an epitome of development in all sectors,” he said.

Citing that effort would be made to make the state become self-dependent in food grains and meat products and also bring development to the people in general, the state government has introduced a flagship programme called SEDP and to implement the programme and monitor development in various sectors 14 boards have been constituted.

The CM said that the newly launched SEDP would cover all development sectors with economic and social sectors being the prime focus. As for social sector, the government began it with a healthcare scheme to provide health insurance of Rs 2 lakh cover a year to all households, he said.

Efforts would also be made in other sectors, including administrative, he added.

The three-time Mizoram chief minister said that the SEDP would not be used for distributing money unlike the erstwhile Congress’s New Land Use Policy (NLUP). Various projects would be made through various boards to make use of development funds from the Centre, he said.

The former rebel leader turned politician also said that efforts would be made to exploit the state’s natural resources. He said that Mizoram has a vast track of lands and great potential to usher in development.

He added that the government would give priority to bamboo plantation.

Under the newly implemented SEDP, the state government has constituted 14 boards each headed by the chief minister as chairman and legislators as vice president.

These board are human resource development, health and family welfare, bamboo link road, road and infrastructure development, rubber and allied crops development, agriculture development, horticulture development, veterinary and fishery, land revenue and survey, industrial development, sports, youth affairs and tourism development, social rehabilitation and man power development.
