Guwahati: Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Friday inaugurated the 21st edition of the North-East Book Fair at the Assam Engineering Institute (AEI) playground in Guwahati’s Chandmari area in Assam.
Stressing on the need of protection and promotion of mother tongue for overall development of the society, Naidu requested the youngsters of the country to develop the habit of reading books that has gradually seen reducing after the advent of mass information available on Internet.
“Reading books enhances our knowledge and helps us in expressing our thoughts in a better way. Hence it builds up as a good communicator,” Naidu said.
The Vice President also expressed that every village in the country should have a library to help people engage in reading books. He also said that every village should come up with a “prayer house” where people can have a touch of spirituality and purity. He also said that every village should build a “sewalay” to help poor and poverty-hit people.
Addressing the gathering at the inaugural ceremony of the book fair in presence of
Assam governor Jagdish Mukhi, Assam minister for education Siddhartha Bhattacharya among many others, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal appealed teachers to promote reading habits among students by making them read books provided in the library of every school.
Meanwhile, praising the All Assam Publishers and Booksellers Association for organising the North East Book Fair for the last 21 years, CM Sonowal said that it has earned a reputation of a mega book fair over the years and it is also popularly known as “people’s book fair”.
Apart from inaugurating the book fair, Vice President Naidu also handed over the prestigious Vaishnav Sachichandra Borbaruah Award to managing director of Sadin-Pratidin Group, Jayanta Baruah, for his remarkable contribution to society in the field of literature and journalism.
The North East Book Fair, which is being held for 12 days starting from November 1 to 12 this year, is witnessing a large participation of book publishers and sellers from across the country including West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and New Delhi, among others.
