Shillong: Completing things that were left undone by my father is my priority, said United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Balajied Kupar Synrem as he took oath as the new MLA of Shella constituency of Meghalaya on Friday.
Synrem is the son of former chief minister and Assembly Speaker Donkupar Roy, who was the sitting MLA of the constituency. The seat was left vacant after Roy breathed his last at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on July 28 this year.
Meanwhile, Synrem broke all records on Thursday with his landslide victory. He won the bypoll by 12,002 votes against his nearest rival, independent candidate Grace Mary Kharpuri, who secured 5,781 out of a total of 25,199 votes.
Synrem beat Kharpuri by 6,221 votes — a huge margin which his father never achieved during his tenure.
On Friday, he was sworn in by Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh in the presence of chief minister Conrad K Sangma and other political leaders.
Speaking to the media after the swearing-in ceremony, Synrem said, “My aim is to finish the work that is left pending. I will work on schemes that are on hold and will work to get them released. Now talking about the needs of the people in my constituency you will have to give me time, give me a week’s time or so to understand.”
Synrem emphasised the urgency to work on particular road construction that is left pending. “Once the work will begin you will see for yourself what they will be, I am not a man who makes false promises. I don’t like to say what I’m about to work on or do but once the work is done it will speak for itself,” sad Synrem.
“I have just been sworn in; we are yet to decide what portfolio I will be taking care of. We as a party will sit together and decide about my duties,” he added.
Meanwhile, reacting to the victory of the UDP candidate, chief minister Sangma thanked the people of Shella constituency and the political parties of UDP, HSPDP and the NPP.
“This election has been a true tribute to Late Donkupar Roy. I think today he will be looking down on all of us especially his son and I’m sure he will be really proud of the fact that he has won with such a big margin. And I think with that background the fact that in this election we had UDP, HSPD, and NPP come together. The personality of Dr Don was such his entire approach to things was such that he was able to pull people from different political parties and work for a united cause. And this unity of the different parties, unity of the workers and the public, in general, has given such results,” added Sangma.
