I’d like to finish all projects started by my husband: Chakat Aboh

Itanagar: Moments after winning the bypoll to the Khonsa West assembly constituency in Arunachal Pradesh — left vacant by the killing of her husband, sitting MLA Tirong Aboh, by insurgents in May 21 this year — Chakat Aboh thanked the people of the state for showing “so much love and support throughout”.

“I am also grateful to chief minister Pema Khandu and all the political parties for supporting me,” Aboh told Eastmojo over phone.

When questioned about her plan of action, Aboh said that she would like to finish all the projects which were started by her husband (Tirong Aboh) and are “half done”.

Aboh also said that she will try to bring back the peace and harmony in her constituency which the people are not witnessing for two decades. “I will do my level best to eliminate the communal politics, especially between Dadam and Lazu circle,” Aboh added.

In the by-poll held on October 24, the constituency witnessed a straight contest between two independent candidates — Chakat Aboh and Azet Hamtok. It has a total of 10,185 electorates, including 4,959 male and 5,226 female voters. The total number of polling stations set up for the by-poll was 23.

While Chakat belongs to Dadam Village of Tirap district, Hamtok is a native of Lonyen Village in Lazu circle of the district.

The Khonsa (West) seat had fallen vacant after its sitting MLA Tirong Aboh, his 20-year-old son and nine others were brutally gunned down by suspected insurgents in Tirap district on May 21 this year.

Aboh, who had contested this year’s assembly elections as a National People’s Party (NPP) candidate, was on his way to Khonsa, the district headquarters of Tirap, from Dibrugarh in Assam when suspected Naga militants opened fire on his four-vehicle convoy.

Aboh had also retained the seat by defeating his lone rival, Phawang Lowang of the BJP, by 1,055 votes.

The National Investigation Agency is currently looking into the case.
