Agartala: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has condemned the arrest of former state PWD minister and deputy opposition leader, Badal Choudhury, and alleged that the state government has leveled false charges against the former minister.
A press statement from the politburo of the CPI(M) said, “We strongly condemn the arrest of Badal Choudhury, leader of the CPI(M) in Tripura, while he was in the ICU of a private hospital in Agartala.”
“The BJP state government has leveled false charges against Badal Chowdhury concerning his tenure as the PWD minister in the Left Front government in the execution of certain projects,” the statement said.
It also read that other senior officials, including the former chief secretary of the state, have been named in the FIR and it shows the extent to which the BJP government can go to level baseless charges and target the CPI (M) leadership.
“The arrest of Badal Choudhury while he was in the hospital and when the Tripura High Court was to pass an order on his anticipatory ball application shows the vindictive nature of the action. Such action will not suppress the CPI(M) nor tarnish its image as the people of Tripura know very well the exemplary and honest record of the Left Front government,” the press statement of CPI (M) said, adding: “The CPI (M) will fight the case for Badal Choudhury both legally and politically.”
Earlier on Tuesday evening, the Tripura High Court rejected the bail petition of the former PWD minister and after a five-day-long search, the police managed to arrest him from a private hospital in Agartala.
The former minister is accused of an alleged scam of PWD carried out in 2008-2009 amounting to more than Rs 600 crore.
