Agartala: Two more border haats (border markets) have been approved by the Centre and the work for setting them up will begin soon, said Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb in Agartala on Wednesday.

Speaking at an event in Agartala, Deb said that border haats play an important role to build relationship between two neighbouring countries. People from both countries come closer and together in the haats for buying and selling commodities from one another, he said.

“I have been told that the permission for setting up of two new border haats in Ragna village of Dharmanagar in North district and Kamalpur in Dhalai district has been given. Border haats will help to develop the relationship between India and Bangladesh and will also boost the business,” Deb said.

Currently, two border haats are functional in Tripura — one at Kamalasagar in Sepahijala district and the other at Srinagar in Sabroom subdivision of South Tripura district.

Speaking further, Deb said that on Tuesday he was in Assam to attend an India-Bangladesh Stakeholders’ Meeting held in Guwahati and he was surprised when he saw that the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal praising for the development of the Tripura.

“I have asked the commerce minister of Bangladesh and economic advisor of Bangladesh Prime Minister that at present import-export is happening through Petrapole and Benaple in West Bengal, whereas Tripura is more accessible for Bangladesh. I have requested to them to enlist Tripura as an export point for the neighbouring country. I have also requested to increase the volume of exports through Tripura. Through this, not only Tripura but also Bangladesh is going to benefit,” Deb said.

Chief minister Deb said that businessmen from Bangladesh, who participated in the stakeholders’ meet in Guwahati, also expressed their interest to set up industries in the proposed Special Economic Zone to be set up in Sabroom of South Tripura tripura, around 130 km from Agartala.
