Shillong: To avoid any traffic congestion in Shillong on the funeral day of Archbishop Dominic Jala, the police department have now worked out traffic arrangements. The temporary arrangement will be enforced from 6 am on Wednesday, and withdrawn after the rituals are completed.
East Khasi Hills district SP Claudia Lyngwa called for a press conference on Monday to ensure that the traffic arrangements go out to all the people in Meghalaya who would be attending the funeral.
“From Dhanketi point towards Don Bosco Point, cars will not be allowed to enter. Vice-versa, no entry of cars from Don Bosco towards Dhanketi Point,” said the SP.
Parking arrangements for heavy motor vehicles have been made. Heavy motor vehicles coming from Laitkor will have to park their vehicles at Nongthymmai playground and Madan Iewrynghep ground.
As for heavy motor vehicles coming from upper Shillong side, vehicles are to be parked at Bucher road. For HMV coming from GS road via Mawlai-Phudmuri road vehicles are to be parked at SRGT, Polo.
“Since people from other states will also be attending the funeral, Selesian Training Centre and Don Bosco Technical School will be reserved for them,” said the SP.
Below is the list of places for parking arrangements for light motor vehicles:
- Malki Playground

Meanwhile, Lyngwa also expressed joy with how the residents of Mawlai acted as responsible citizens and ensured that there was no traffic congestion.
“The police department would like to appreciate the public in Mawlai. When the cortege of Late Most Reverend Dominic Jala was entering Mawlai, there was not a single vehicle, not a single bike or scooter seen. Everybody went on foot and no one was seen using their vehicle, this made our work so easy. The officials deployed in Mawlai didn’t have to do anything,” said the SP.
The SP urged the people in Shillong who will be attending the funeral to ditch their cars and walk so that the city does not come to a standstill.
