Tengnoupal: As part of the continued drive on illegal drug businesses in Manipur, a team of police and Assam Rifles seized a huge quantity of drugs worth over Rs 20 crore in two separate incidents in Tengnoupal district bordering with Myanmar, say reports.
According to reports, a team of police on Saturday launched a mobile frisking and checking drive at Dalpati area near the border town of Moreh to intercept contraband items being smuggled through the international border.
During checking, a scooter loaded with two gunny bags behind the rider was asked to stop. However, the rider fled the spot leaving behind the scooter along with the suspicious items, the reports said.
Two gunny bags containing suspected brown sugar weighing a total of 9.722 kg and transparent plastic packets for packaging worth Rs 19 crore in the international market were recovered, the report said.
The seized items, including the scooter, have been handed over to the Moreh police station for further investigation.
Meanwhile, in another drive, a team of Assam Rifles recently recovered contraband drugs worth Rs 1.83 crore in Tengnoupal district.
During a routine check, troops of Assam Rifles under HQ IGAR (south) intercepted a suspicious silver colour Eeco van near Khudengthabi check-post. Thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 11 packets of brown sugar and 52,000 World is Yours (WIY) tablets worth Rs 1.83 crore, according to an official release.
The driver who was driving the van has been identified as Ginmuanlain Zou of Lhangnem village in Churachandpur district, it said.
The arrested individual and the recovered items have been handed over to Moreh police station for further investigation.
