Agartala: In a span of three days, nine police officials were placed under suspension while the DIG, Southern Range has been placed in the PHQ by the Tripura government after they failed to nab former PWD minister Badal Chowdhury on Wednesday night, who is an accused in the PWD scam amounting to over Rs 600 crore.
A day after putting the West Tripura Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajit Pratap Singh on suspension, eight more police officials, including the deputy superintendent of District Intelligence Branch (DIB), Banuj Biplab Das, were placed under suspension apparently for “negligence” of duty on Saturday.
An order copy, signed by the deputy secretary, government of Tripura said, “A disciplinary proceeding against Banuj Biplab Das, TPS Gr-II, Dy. SP (HQ), West Tripura looking after the work of Dy. SP (DIB), West is contemplated/pending.”
Now, therefore the competent authority in exercise of powers conferred by sub-rule (1) of Rule-10 of the Central Civil Services (Classification, Control, and Appeal) Rules-1965 hereby places Banuj Biplab Das, TPS Gr-II, Dy. SP (HQ), West Tripura looking after the work of Dy. SP (DIB), West under suspension with immediate effect, the order copy said.
The department on Friday evening suspended the officer-in-charge of the West Agartala police station, Debaprasad Roy, three personal security guards of former PWD minister, Pradip Acharjee, Amar Sarkar and Amal Das for not being able to locate the whereabouts of the accused.
Three more constable-ranked officials of the district intelligence branch, namely, Shamal Debbarma, Kishore Rauth and Ranjit Debbarma, were also suspended for the lack of duty on Friday evening.
Earlier, the West Tripura SP Ajit Pratap Singh was suspended on Thursday, while the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Southern Range, Arindam Nath was shifted to Police Headquarters with immediate effect.
The officer-in-charge of West Agartala police station Debaprasad Roy, when contacted, said, “I am aware that I have been put under suspension, but the reason is not known to me.”
A team of IPS officers also called upon the chief minister who holds the portfolio of home department demanding revocation of the West Tripura SP and reinstatement of DIG Arindam Nath.
Earlier, the police department had appointed Ajay Kumar Das as the new deputy superintendent of police of the crime branch giving him the charge of investigating officer in the PWD scam with immediate effect.
The previous investigating officer, Raju Reang, a sub-divisional police officer of the new Capital Complex (NCC) West Tripura, has been transferred and replaced by Sadar SDPO Dhruba Nath.
The reshuffle in the home department came after the team of police failed to find out the former minister after the district and sessions court rejected his anticipatory bail late on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, the anticipatory bail petition of the former PWD minister and deputy leader of the opposition Badal Chowdhury has been listed on the vacation bench of the High Court of Tripura and is likely to be heard by Justice Arindam Lodh on October 21.
Speaking with the reporters, the counsel of Badal Chowdhury said that they had filed an application in the high court for hearing. The registry has informed us that Justice Arindam Lodh will hear the anticipatory bail petition on Monday from 2 pm.
Badal Chowdhury is accused of being involved in the scam over Rs 600 crore and was the PWD minister during the left front government when the work was carried out.
