Clubs with their individual themes and idols on their way to immersion in Agartala on Friday

Agartala: The first-of-its-kind carnival bidding farewell to goddess Durga, called ‘Mayer Baiday’ 2019, was inaugurated by Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national general secretary Ram Madhav in Agartala on Friday.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Ram Madhav said that this was the first time that Tripura will witness a carnival of Durga Puja and such initiatives will help in connecting people.

“This was for the first time I have seen such a programme in Tripura. It is indeed a very good initiative by the state government. Such initiative helps in build[ing] unity among the people. The state government should organise such programmes in coming years also,” he added.

He also urged all the club members of the city to organise environmental-friendly events in the state so that the people need not suffer later.

The national general secretary pressed on the need for preparing the idols out of clay instead of POP, which is harmful for the environment. He also apprised on the dangers posed by single-use plastic to our planet.

Madhav suggested that “The state government should arrange an artificial pond for the club members of the state for the immersion of the Durga idols. This way, the rivers and ponds of our states won’t get dirty and polluted.”

Chief minister Deb said that this year the number of Durga Puja pandals across the state has increased from 2,200 to 2,550.

A total of 30 clubs participated in the carnival with their themes, showcasing idols in a colourful show of gaiety and grandeur.

Two stages were also set up near City Center Mall, of which one was made for the VVIP dignitaries including the chief minister and Ram Madhav, while the other for the others VIPs including the MLAs.

Adequate security arrangements were made across the city and the entire stretch from Post office Chowmuhani to Dashami Ghat was decorated with lights and sound system.
