IIT Guwahati situated at Amingaon locality of Kamrup (rural) district

Guwahati: An FIR has been lodged at North Guwahati police station in Kamrup (Rural) district of Assam against the director and deans of the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati for allegedly misusing funds of students.

As per reports, a research scholar from the department of electronics and electrical engineering lodged a complaint at the local police station accusing director TG Sitharam and deans of IIT Guwahati for allegedly abusing their position as public servants.

Following the complaint, the cops registered a case under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 13(2) read with Section 13(1)(d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 against the officials.

As per the FIR filed by research scholar Vikrant Singh, the director and deans of IIT Guwahati had held a meeting at a five-star hotel in August this year and had allegedly paid the bills for the same from the Institute’s fund, which is public money.

“Despite having all requisite facilities inside the institute’s campus, holding a meeting and having food at a five-star hotel for their own enjoyment using public funds does not involve any public interest,” Singh further stated in his complaint.

Providing a video clip of the August 10 meeting to the cops as a proof for his allegations, Singh further said that the director of IIT Guwahati can clearly be seen giving an unjustified statement for holding the meet at the five-star hotel citing disturbance due to phone calls inside the institute campus.

Speaking with EastMojo, investigating officer of North Guwahati police station Mukut Baishya revealed the incident was reported to the cops in reprisal of the administration’s decision to take stringent action against two faculty members of the Department of EEE following a brawl over personal issues.

“It is then, Vikrant Singh who happens to be a scholar under the guidance of one of the faculty members, decided to take an action in reprisal against the administration and lodged the complaint on a matter back to almost three months,” Baishya added.
