Assam students, forest officials urge people to protect wildlife

Biswanath: Marking the celebrations of 65th Wildlife Week, forest department officials and students took out a massive rally in Assam’s Sonitpur district on Tuesday.

The wildlife protection march, which was organised by the divisional forest range officials from Sonitpur and Biswanath districts, witnessed a massive participation of school students. Besides carrying out awareness on wildlife protection, the students also raised slogans on many other issues including a plastic free environment, plantation of trees and conservation of rhinos.

“Life will be there only if there are trees”, “Say no to plastics”, “Stop Rhino Killing” were some of the slogans raised by the students.

Five domestic elephants led the awareness march followed by students, members of wildlife organisations and forest department officials.

Speaking to media on the sidelines of the street march, a forest department official said that the awareness march was a part of the three day-long event marking the wildlife week celebrations and is aimed at creation of wildlife awareness among people.

“A quiz on wildlife protection will be held at Biswanath college on Wednesday,” he added.

He further expressed that the awareness march has seen a massive participation of school students who came out in support of wildlife protection and also spread their words to the public.

Similarly, the 65th Wildlife Week was also observed at the Pobitora National Park in Assam’s Morigaon district with a cultural rally carried out by the authorities of the wildlife sanctuary. Students from several schools of the region took part in the massive march.
