Tinsukia: The police have arrested a local drug peddler and recovered 443 grams of suspected opium along with Rs 6.6 lakh in cash from No 2 Bisagaon village under Lekhapani police station in Assam’s Tinsukia district on Friday night.
The accused has been identified as Jeevan Chetry.
Speaking with EastMojo, Tinsukia SP Shiladitya Chetia said, “Based on information, the police raided the house of Chetry and recovered opium besides weighing and measuring equipment.”
“We have recovered cash worth Rs 6.6 lakh which is suspected to be earned from trafficking of NDPS substances,” he added.
According to Chetia, the police had employed sources in the bordering areas with Arunachal Pradesh to gather information on movement of drugs and people involved in the trade. “We are interrogating the accused based on which follow-up operations will be conducted to bust the racket,” he added.
The police have lodged an FIR at Lekhapani PS vide case no 131/19.
According to sources, the porous border of Assam with Arunachal Pradesh is often used by drug peddlers to smuggle drugs into Tinsukia.
