Over 80 cattle were seized in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Thursday morning

Kokrajhar: Five persons have been arrested for their alleged involvement in illegally carrying cattle on five trucks at Karigaon area along the NH-31C in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Thursday.

The trucks were carrying 80 cattle, including 14 buffaloes, when the police stopped them during checking on Thursday. The vehicles were bound for Nine Mile in Guwahati from Pandipara and Sonapur of West Bengal. The cattle were purchased by Guwahati-based Pioneer Livestocks.

During the checking, the drivers failed to show proper valid purchase documents, after which the trucks and the cattle were seized.

An FIR has been lodged at the Kokrajhar police station under Section 420 of the IPC, besides relevant sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, 1960.

The seized trucks and cattle have been kept at Dimalgaon under police custody and necessary treatment has been provided to the animals by veterinary doctors. However, the condition of two cows is said to be deteriorating.

The arrested persons have been identified as Rahim Ali (29) of Kamrup,Tazmul Haque (24) of Darrang, Mir Hussain(28) of Dhubri, Mridul Haque (25) of Darrang and Abed Ali (27) of Udalguri.

“Seized cattle are being offered sufficient care and medical treatment under police custody at Dimalgaon,” said a police officer in Kokrajhar.

Meanwhile, Pioneer Livestocks members claimed that they have shown valid documents of purchasing, yet the police arrested the truck drivers.
