Itanagar: In a proud moment for Northeast and Arunachal Pradesh in particular, a lady officer hailing from state’s East Siang district has been recently promoted to the rank of a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army.
Interestingly, Ponung Doming hailing from Pasighat in East Siang district becomes the first lady officer from state to be promoted to the rank of a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army. Doming was promoted to the honoured rank from her earlier position as a Major.
The eldest daughter of Alom Doming and Jimmi Dai Doming, Ponung passed her high school from the government higher secondary school in Pasighat and later completed her Bachelors Engineering from the Walchand College of Engineering in Maharashtra.
She then joined the Officers Training Academy at Chennai in the year 2008 and was inducted into Indian Army as a Lieutenant the same year.

Besides serving the Indian Army by being postied at several places across the country, Ponung was also a parted of the United Nations Peace Keeping Force Mission and was deputed at the Democratic Republic of Congo in the year 2014. She stayed in Congo for a period of six months.
Significantly, posting at his official twitter account, Arunachal chief minister Pema Khandu congratulated the lady officer from state for her achievements and expressed gratitude for her career.
“A proud moment for all of us… Major #PonungDoming creates history. She is the first woman Army officer from #Arunachal to be elevated to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the #IndianArmy. Hearty congratulations and best wishes!,” the chief minister tweeted.
